Update: Escalation in NW Syria continues, as Russia joins the fray

First, read this October 12 analysis: Is NW Syria on the brink of major conflict?

As tensions continued to rise in northwest Syria through the weekend, Russia’s air force launched its first strikes in the region for at least three months on October 14 – conducting two waves of strikes. Around midday, Su-24 and Su-34s took off from Hmeymim Airbase and struck at least 23 separate targets in Idlib (Basanqul, Hosh Batintah and rural areas in the western countryside) and northeast Latakia (Kabaneh). These actions took place during a visit to Idlib by UN Deputy Regional Coordinator for Syria, David Carden, with video footage later showing him and his staff watching on. Later that evening, the same Russian aircraft took to the skies again, launching airstrikes on at least six targets in al-Kindah, Sheikh Sindyan and Ma’arand in Idlib’s Jisr al-Shughour region.
