With Assad’s regime a thing of the past, Syria Weekly is re-assessing what kinds of violence across Syria would be most useful to monitor. Two months into the transition, it is clear that the overall level of violent deaths (including from unexploded ordinance, or UXO) is increasing to dangerous levels. Much of this goes largely unreported on a national level across Syria, so awareness remains minimal. In terms of overall violence, very governorate is different. In Homs and Latakia in particular, targeted attacks (assassinations, kidnappings) continue to rise — with some clearly indicative of revenge killings, but others distinctly ambiguous in terms of precise motive and perpetrator. Incidents of armed resistance against the interim government appear to be gradually rising too.
