SYRIA’S TRANSITION:

Transition Meetings:

February 10:

  • Energy Minister Mohammed al-Bashir hosted a meeting with Deputy Turkish Energy Minister Ahmet Dorduncu on February 10 and discussed proposed cooperation in offshore and onshore oil and gas exploration.

  • Minister of Economy and Industry Nidal al-Shaar hosted a meeting with UN Resident Coordinator for Development Activities, Nathalie Fustier, on February 10 to discuss coordinating jointly to support a sustainable path of development in Syria.

  • Later that day, Minister al-Shaar also met with Italian Ambassador to Damascus, Stefano Ravagnan, and discussed the establishment of a Syrian-Italian Business Council.

  • Minister of Higher Education Marwan al-Halabi hosted a meeting with EU Charge d’Affairs Michael Ohnmacht on February 10 to discuss the potential reopening of an ERASMUS office to support scholarships and study in European universities.

  • Later that day, Minister al-Halabi hosted a meeting with the US-headquartered NGO MedGlobal, represented by its Syria Country Director Anas Barbour, to discuss the development of Syria’s medical and mental health education sectors.

  • The Director General of the Syrian Development Fund, Safwat Raslan, hosted a meeting on February 10 with the Syrian-American Business Council to discuss its programming and priorities and how to cooperate in facilitating development projects and investment in Syria.

  • The Foreign Ministry’s Director of International Cooperation, Qutaiba Qadesh, hosted a meeting with Sweden’s Deputy Minister of Immigration, Anders Hall, on February 10.

  • The Ministry of Energy signed a $12.4 million agreement with the government of Japan and UNDP on February 10 begin rehabilitation work at the Jandar Power Plant in Homs in order to enable to consistent and reliable supply of 540MW of electricity to the grid.

  • Governor to Suwayda Mustafa Bakkour hosted a meeting with a delegation from Qatar Charity on February 10.
